There is a statistic that stops me every time I encounter it.

Children in the United Kingdom now spend, on average, less time outside than maximum-security prison inmates. Prisoners in the UK are legally entitled to at least one hour of outdoor time per day. Most British children get less than that.

This is not a British phenomenon specifically — similar data exists for children in the United States, Australia, and across much of Western Europe. The average child today spends approximately four to seven minutes in unstructured outdoor play daily. They spend approximately four to seven hours in front of screens. The Particular Cost for Children Who Are Struggling

I want to spend some time on a specific group, because I think the evidence here is particularly important and particularly underutilised.

Children with ADHD, anxiety, autism, sensory processing differences, and other conditions that make indoor, structured environments particularly challenging, show some of the largest benefits from outdoor time in the research. This is not coincidental. These are children whose nervous systems are most stressed by the demands of the indoor, structured, social environment that constitutes most of their day. The outdoor natural environment reduces many of those demands — it is less socially complex, more sensory-rich in ways that are regulating rather than overwhelming, less rule-bound, and more forgiving of atypical behaviour than most indoor settings.

A child with ADHD who struggles to sit still, who cannot sustain attention on a task, who is in near-constant conflict with the demands of classroom behaviour, often looks completely different in a natural outdoor environment. The same child who cannot stay in a chair for twenty minutes can sustain engagement in outdoor exploration for hours. The child who disrupts the classroom with impulsive behaviour is often calm and focused when climbing, building, or exploring outside.

This is not magic. It is the result of a better fit between the child’s nervous system and the environment’s demands. And it has practical implications: for many children with special needs, prioritising outdoor time is not just a recreational nicety — it is one of the most effective regulatory interventions available, and one that requires no professional involvement and no cost beyond the willingness to be outside.

What Gets in the Way

If outdoor play is this good for children, why are they getting so little of it? The barriers are real, and dismissing them does not help.

Safety concerns — both real and perceived — have significantly restricted children’s independent outdoor range over the past thirty years. And the school environment, where children spend a significant proportion of their waking hours, has in many countries moved steadily away from outdoor time — shorter breaks, reduced physical education, and an increasing focus on academic outcomes that treats outdoor time as a distraction rather than as a contributor to the very academic and developmental outcomes the school is trying to produce.

What Actually Helps: Practical Actions

This is where I want to be specific, because “children need more outdoor time” is a statement that everyone agrees with and few families translate into actual change. The barrier is rarely disagreement about the value of outdoor play. It is activation energy — the inertia that keeps things as they are when change requires deliberate effort.

Make it a routine rather than a special occasion

Outdoor time that happens reliably, as an unremarkable part of the daily structure, is far more durable than outdoor time that is planned as an activity. A child who goes outside every afternoon after school, as a matter of routine, accumulates far more outdoor time than one whose outdoor time depends on planning, good weather, or parental enthusiasm. Building outdoor time into the daily routine — before or after school, before dinner, as part of weekend morning structure — makes it happen consistently rather than occasionally.

Dress for it

Weather is a genuine barrier in many climates, and it stops being a barrier almost entirely when children are appropriately equipped for it. Waterproof outer layers, warm underlayers, appropriate footwear for mud and wet grass — with these in place, the vast majority of weather conditions that prevent outdoor play in most families are manageable. The Scandinavian approach — “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing” — is practically true. A child who is warm and dry can play outside happily in conditions that are genuinely unpleasant for an adult in inadequate clothing.

Reduce the agenda

Outdoor time that is structured — organised activities, supervision of specific play, parental direction of what to do — provides some of the physical benefits of outdoor play but fewer of the cognitive, emotional, and developmental ones. The benefits described in this article accrue primarily from unstructured outdoor time, where the child decides what to do and does it without adult direction. This requires parents to be comfortable with a child who is doing nothing obviously productive — wandering, watching insects, building something purposeless, simply being outside. The temptation to fill that time with directed activity should be resisted.

Start where you are

A garden is better than nothing, but it is not necessary. A street, a park, a green strip, a school playground outside of hours — these all count. The research on natural environment and child wellbeing shows consistent benefits even from modest amounts of green space, even from urban parks, even from brief daily walks through neighbourhoods with trees. Perfect outdoor access is not necessary. Some outdoor access, consistently, is what matters.

Be outside yourself

Children follow modelled behaviour more reliably than instruction. A parent who values outdoor time and is visibly outdoors — who goes for walks, who sits in the garden, who notices and comments on what is outside — is communicating something about the value of being outside that “go and play outside” without accompanying action does not. The parent who reads in the garden while the child plays is providing something different from the parent who sends the child outside and closes the door. Both are better than nothing. The former is better than the latter.

A Note on Risk

I want to end this section with something that I think deserves to be said clearly, because it is the piece of the outdoor play conversation that most parents find most difficult.

Children need risk. Not danger — not exposure to genuinely hazardous situations that could produce serious injury. But managed risk: the experience of doing something that might not succeed, that requires real physical effort and judgement, that has real consequences if it goes wrong. This kind of risk is intrinsically part of what outdoor play, and particularly natural outdoor play, provides — and it is largely absent from the indoor, supervised, padded environments that have replaced it.

The research on risky play is consistent in finding that children who are denied opportunities for managed physical risk develop higher levels of anxiety about physical challenge, less accurate assessment of their own physical capability, and less resilience in the face of physical difficulty. The child who has never fallen off something and gotten back up does not have the same relationship with failure and recovery as the one who has. The scratched knee and the muddy fall and the branch that gave way are not dangers to be prevented. They are, within reasonable limits, the curriculum of outdoor play.

Allowing this — accepting the scratched knees and the muddy clothes and the occasional minor injury as the acceptable cost of experiences that are genuinely valuable — is one of the hardest things contemporary parenting asks parents to do. It asks them to override the anxiety that is a natural response to watching a child take a risk. It asks them to trust the child’s judgement in a way that requires suppressing the protective instinct. And it asks them to resist a cultural environment that treats any childhood injury as evidence of parental failure.

The research says this is worth doing. The children who are allowed managed outdoor risk are more capable, more confident, and more resilient than those who are not. The cost is some scratches and some anxiety for the watching adult. The benefit is significant and lasting.
